thoughts from celtics/cavs - 10/24.
opening night. finally. i feel like i'd been waiting for last night's game for over a year. seeing kg back was great, but let's get some observations out of the way.
- i don't like the fact that leon powe felt it necessary to talk trash before the game. he's not playing, for one, but to continually comment on how you feel like a jilted date is played out. i know a lot of celtics fans are of the mindset that letting leon walk was a mistake. i love leon as a player, but i don't think it was a mistake at all. the guy blew out his acl for a second time. there are only so many times you can fix one thing, and the front office had every right to be cautious about signing him. the kid put his all into it, and got a raw deal, sure. from what i gathered, he got offered a similar deal from the c's after the fact, but he makes it sound like he was kicked out with a hobo pack. sorry leon, not buying into it. move on. you're in a good situation for you. don't mar that by trashing the first team you were on.
- i was reading the comments from the other side over at celticsgreen and i noticed a few amusing trends.
1. everyone thinks the refs are against their side. all the time. even in the 4th i found myself marveling at the 9 to 1 foul disparity, but i think the refs tried to make up for it in the end of the quarter.
2. the trash talk was hilarious. cavs fans were completely convinced that there was no possible way that the celtics could have won that game, and that they were already well on their way to a undefeated home stand. as the game progressed, their confident talk turned into "oh, well we weren't ready." pretty sure they all want a do-over.
- it is really great to see KG back on the floor. i still don't think he's quite ready, though. also, i find myself panicking every time he hits the ground, or jumps for the quick basket. i think it will take about 20 games to stop me from tensing up every time. that said, he seems a little rusty still. KG at 90% is better than no KG at all, but he's not quite back to form yet.
- rasheed wallace did not get a technical foul. and steve javie was officiating. HA.
- i'm in a fantasy basketball league with speedwell. i kept dreading the lakers game because with the 4th pick i had to take kobe or go way further down the list. anywho, fantasy basketball makes you much more invested into the game. it's my first time playing, but every time paul pierce did something right i was doing a little dance on my barstool.
- i'm disappointed in big baby, but what can you do? i was beginning to get a little irritated at the "no one tells me anything" story he was giving to the press, and this is simply the icing on the cake of my annoyance. i think it'll make him take his role a bit more seriously thrusting shelden williams into his role wasn't exactly fair, but at least sheldo tried to keep the defense going, even if his shots wouldn't fall. the most annoying part? glen davis had MMA training all friggin summer. couldn't he have done that crap instead of a bad punch that broke the thumb on his shooting hand?
- what the hell was up with the beginning of the first quarter? until i worked out that the cavs bench is not as stacked, i legitimately got a little panicky. i sincerely hope that the celtics will be out of the gate better against the bobcats, but even the bobcats are coming off a messy injury situation.
it was a good win. not a great win, they seemed asleep at the beginning, but definitely a good one. loved the contributions of sheed and rondo catching his step, and i must admit that those lebron blocks were kind of sick.
will check in tomorrow if i don't get tickets to the game. until then!
