Are the South Carolina Gamecocks Peaking at the Right Time? Dawn Staley Hopes So!
Jeff Blake-USA TODAY Sports

Even without Kamila Cardoso in the NCAA Tournament opener, the South Carolina Gamecocks have managed to win the first two games to reach the Sweet 16. And according to head coach Dawn Staley, her team is peaking at the right time this year.

Just recently, the Gamecocks met North Carolina in the second round and thoroughly dismantled them in a dominant 88-41 win. MiLaysia Fulwiley came off the bench to lead everyone in scoring by dropping 20 points to go along with her nine rebounds, and three steals. Cardoso also came up big with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds to help South Carolina advance.

The Tar Heels, on the other hand, only had Alyssa Ustby score in double-digits with 12 points. Meanwhile, Maria Gakdeng was the only player in UNC’s lineup that night to score more than 35 percent of her field goals.

Thanks to North Carolina’s horrible performance on the court, the Gamecocks were able to perform on all cylinders and handle their business without any question nor doubt. As a result, South Carolina’s undefeated streak has been extended to 34 wins and no losses for this season.

South Carolina Gamecocks Are Peaking Now, Dawn Staley Says After Dominant Win Against North Carolina

After the game, Staley spoke to the media and praised her team after winning against UNC. In an article written by Katie Barnes for ESPN:

“We haven’t played like that in a super long time,” Staley said after her team led by as many as 51 points. “We actually were talking about that in the coaches’ locker room, like, we haven’t played well all together. Every single one of our players made an impact coming into the game,” Barnes wrote.

Throughout the season, South Carolina ranked second with the most points scored per game. They are also 11th among all teams in points allowed with only 55.4 per contest.

The win has placed South Carolina in the Sweet 16 and one step closer to winning the NCAA Tournament. With how dominant they are, it would be no surprise if the Gamecocks win it all in the coming weeks.
