Ricardo Lamas confirms UFC retirement

Ricardo Lamas confirmed on Monday that his first UFC bout in over a year was also his last.

Per Marc Raimondi of ESPN, Lamas told MMA Radio that he is retiring from active fighting at the age of 38. He admitted that he first considered walking away from the sport ahead of his July 2017 bout versus Jason Knight, a match Lamas won. He dropped three of his subsequent four fights and also suffered a broken jaw when he lost to Calvin Kattar in June 2019. 

Beating Bill Algeo this past Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas proved to be a walkoff performance for Lamas, who improved to 20-8-0.

Lamas never carried UFC gold and lost his featherweight title contest against Jose Aldo via unanimous decision at UFC 169 in Feb. 2014. He nevertheless managed to earn a main-event spot versus Chad Mendes in April 2015 and impressed in his win over Algeo via unanimous decision. 12 of 16 media members surveyed by MMA Decisions scored the contest in favor of Lamas, while four judged the fight a draw.
