Kyle Larson reveals plans to prepare Kevin Harvick for All-Star Weekend races

Kyle Larson is working out the details with Kevin Harvick for a busy NASCAR All-Star weekend. The 31-year-old driver spoke to reporters about Harvick driving his No. 5 car during the NASCAR All-Star Race practices on Saturday and said he will contact Harvick in a couple of days.

“I don’t have a time that I’ve heard about debriefing with Kevin. I figured I was just going to shoot him some text messages after practice and all that just to see kind of what he thought of things,” Larson said. “I think I have my own meeting with Cliff [Daniels] and our team on Saturday at some point. I’m sure that’s when I’ll learn how everything’s going and changes that they’ll make to the car, what they thought of the tires and track surface and all that.”

Larson is currently in Indianapolis for Indy 500 qualifying and will miss the NASCAR All-Star Race heat races on Saturday. He is looking to become the fifth driver in history to attempt to run the Indy500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the the day day.

Larson will make his Indy 500 debut next week in a joint deal struck with Arrow McLaren, which is fielding a fourth car for Larson in conjunction with Hendrick Motorsports, per ESPN.

“I’m really excited to get this experience underway and get consecutive days in the car,” Larson said. “That’s been the toughest thing so far, that I go months at a time between each time I’m in the car. I’ve got to try to learn quickly here the next few days.”

Harvick retired from full-time racing last year but is excited to be helping Larson out at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Earlier this month Harvick talked about accepting the offer from Rick Hendrick.

Rick called and said, ‘Hey, I want you to drive the car.’ And I said, ‘Let me make a few phone calls.’ So, I had to call my bosses here at FOX [and] I had to call my wife. … Before I went to my wife, I needed to make sure that everybody’s OK with this. So, I called everybody that I thought I needed to and then I called my wife, and I was like, ‘Hey, are you sitting down?’ She’s like, ‘I’m driving.’ I said, ‘Well, maybe you should pull over.’ … I said, ‘So, they’ve asked me to drive Kyle Larson’s car during the North Wilkesboro weekend.’

“And she’s like, ‘Well, what’d you say?’ I said, ‘Well, I said yes, of course because there’s just not too many opportunities that are presented the way that this one was presented from Rick to say I need a favor.’ And she’s like, ‘Well, if Mr. Hendrick needs a favor, he’s done us good, you should go do it.’”
